I am a member of the YMCA and have a child on the U12 team coached by Philip Newsome. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the treatment we have experienced throughout the winter basketball season. At the start of the season, Coach Newsome assured all parents that he would play each child fairly and give everyone a chance to participate. Unfortunately, my child has consistently played the least of anyone on the team. Despite having only 6 or 7 players available, my child is often the one sitting out, and during a 45-minute game, he typically gets just 8 minutes of playtime. On one occasion, he played for even less than that.I have reported these concerns to the director, Lane, multiple times, but I have seen no improvement. In his response, Lane mentioned that he observed two games after speaking with Coach Newsome and concluded that the coach was adhering to policy. However, he only attended one game after our conversation, as only one game had taken place at that time.I also reached out to the branch executive, Melinda Moore, regarding this issue, but I have yet to receive a response. When my child asked Coach Newsome about being pulled out frequently, he was told, I dont care, when he mentioned he would speak to Lane about it.Even if my child is not the strongest player, he deserves the opportunity to improve through playtime, just like the others. He is trying his best and is comparable to many of his teammates.Having been a part of Kettering YMCA since he was 6 years old, we have never encountered a situation where we dont know any of the other kids names. It has been disheartening to feel mistreated to the point where attending practices and games has become a struggle. The only reason we continue to attend is to show resilience in the face of unfair treatment; my son does not want to quit. All he desires is fair playtime and respectful treatment.Furthermore, Coach Newsome has not acknowledged us or engaged with us during this time, which adds to our disappointment. We will no longer be signing our child up at this gym again. Although we are residents of Kettering, we are willing to drive even further for respect.
