Data harvesting, anti-privacy, and hostile behavior from staff. This morning I drove from Corona to meet up with a friend for a workout. We'd been planning this for a few days. We hadn't seen each other in a couple of years, so I was pretty excited. When I get there I requested the 3 day guest pass. They asked if I was from the local area and I said yes. They asked to see my ID to verify, which I handed over no problem, but they said that Corona is still too far. Ok, no big deal they said, I could just buy a day pass for 15. No problem for me.They asked for my ID again and told me they would have to hold on to it for the duration of my stay. This is a big red flag. A very strange policy, but I'm concerned about my personal data, so I ask if it's just to keep or if they're going to input my data into their system. The girl that was helping me attitude immediately changed and she snarkily asked if I had something important to hide. I replied that no, I just like to keep my personal data private. She replied that they're just holding onto it. I thought it was very strange that a gym would want to hold onto my ID, but I had just drove 20 minutes and I really wanted to work out with my friend, so I said OK.Then she started asking me for my personal information. She said she would need my full name, my birthday, my email, and a phone number. I don't provide my real information to businesses unless it's absolutely necessary. A gym does not need all of that, especially since I'm actually a paying customer and not just getting a free pass. I don't like to argue though so I gave them fake information. When I got to my email I asked to type it in.She handed me the keyboard and I typed in an obviously fake email. She said she needed a valid email. I asked if it comes up as invalid in the system but instead of answering she just repeated her request. I asked to check and saw the screen did in fact show that it was invalid. Before I could respond she told me I was being really difficult and that if I continue to do so then she's going to refuse me service. I asked if wanting my data privacy to be respected is being difficult and she responded by angrily saying that she's not going to help me anymore.Full disclosure, I reacted and threw the keyboard on the ground and left immediately. Was it the right thing to do? Absolutely not. Was it childish and immature? Certainly. Did they deserve it? Definitely. In all my years of going to businesses, the only times I've been treated with such hostility, was when I was hiking across California and was mistakenly perceived as homeless (people are REALLY mean to homeless people sometimes). I do not in any way shape or form appear to be homeless now. I was wearing new clothes and presented like a normal person. I did not give them a bad attitude, but I was insistent and firm that I wanted my data privacy respected. In the U.S., privacy laws offer little real protection, so once a business has it they spam you with ads and sell it to data brokers, no matter how much they promise they won't. Fake info is the only way to protect yourself. For important things like banking, I'll give real info, but a gym doesn't need it.This gym demands a ridiculous amount of personal data. They demand to hold onto your ID. A gym. That request alone is absolutely insane. I'm surprised they didn't ask for my social security number. The only thing they need to protect against lawsuits and to hold people accountable if the customer breaks something is a signed liability waiver and a credit card. Anything else is really just so they can market to you or sell it to data brokers. This gym doesn't just refuse to respect your privacy rights, they actively do everything they can to harvest as much as your personal data as possible, and treat you with hostility if you refuse. My outburst was inexcusable, but up until that point I was respectful and did not deserve the disrespect and hostility that I was receiving.
