One day I woke up, fell to the floor, was unable to walk, talk or call for help. I am young, very healthy, never had any health issues and one day, woke up after suffering a stroke. Luckily I was airlifted to UCLA and they were able to save my life. I was paralyzed on my right side and had difficulty speaking and have for years worked with fantastic physical and occupational therapists at UCLA, Carole Netter, Allison Sacher and Rebecca Grantham. As I continued to recover I meet Ian Vaughn. To look at him, you might find him intimidating and I wasn't sure if I could do anything he taught or if he would want to train me. Well I was in for a surprise, he should never be underestimated. He talked to my physical and occupational therapists and together we all worked out an individualized plan for me. He utilized different training tools not available at traditional PT/OT sites that continue to make my recovery interesting. He knew that I just needed to train in a way that I could accomplish my goals and continue my recovery. He continues to challenge me, doesn't let me underestimate myself and can see, even if I doubt myself, the progress I can obtain in my future. It can take many years to decades to recover from a stroke. Recovery takes years of hard work, takes dedication, patience and a little help from others.
