Front desk staff are lovely and members are wonderful. You need to understand that this gym is controlled by the DoubleTree Hotel and they are not concerned about the Riverwalk gym members. Hotel guests break rules (and equipment) when they visit and the staff are too afraid of the hotel to enforce rules. Its hard to imagine the hotel is that concerned for their guests who are often met with a cold pool or a hot tub that is down.Like a lot of Riverwalks gym members, I have an injury that prevents me from a lot of landbased activity and was drawn to the Riverwalk gym for its warm saltwater pool. Its the reason I can walk. After being a member for just over a month, the heater broke in the pool. The 84 degree water they boast plummeted to 74 and I continued to show up anyway. If I hadnt, I would have reverted back to being immobile and unable to work. For about a month, I waited while the (Double Tree Hilton) kept the pool mechanic on other jobs and refused to expedite the shipment of parts to repair the issue. During that time, one of the two normal working shower stalls became out of commission in the ladies lockeroom. All female gym members were sharing one shower stall. The hotel guests have their own bathroom, so its not a concern to the hotel and therefore management. After about a month, the pool was repaired and maintained temperature for less than 3 months. In that time, the hot tub broke and the ladies showers would frequently run cold part way through a shower. Then, about a week ago, I received an email that the pool is not as warm again. The last time I swam, it was 74. I was alone when I got in and managed to move enough to make the temperature work. Then maintenance came in and began filling the pool with tap water. A large area in the center of the pool was freezing and I was already hardly able to tolerate the temperature. Then a few minutes later, the crystal clear water became so cloudy, I almost missed the wall approaching as I swam laps. I stopped to check that this was safe. I was all alone. I called out, swam a few laps, called out again (each time getting colder because Im not moving). Finally, maintenance responded and told me it was fine. I finished my swim and went into the locker room shaking from the cold. This was in February. I got into the shower and got half way through when the water went ice cold. Today, I stopped into the gym to ask about the pool. The manager told me I dont have any answers and confirms that the temperature has been holding around 71. I explained what had happened and his answer was that he gets those chemicals all over his hands when he uses them (theyre safe). I asked if he could tell me when maintenance was scheduled to come back so I could avoid the chemicals and cold. He told me that I could call about an hour in advance and that was about it. Thats not nearly enough notice when lanes need to be reserved as much as 24 hours before your swim. The gym offered to pause our membership until repairs are done but I cant wait that long to swim. I need a new gym if its going to be over a month again. The manager doesn't seem to understand that joining a new gym is usually a costly and long-term commitment. I cant just join another gym and then (fee free) pause it on a whim. I love the normal front desk staff and the clientele so I hoped for some compassion from the manager. At this point, its clear that the gym is in an abusive relationship with the hotel and its local members arent being represented as paying equals. When I joined the riverwalk, I thought I was supporting a small local business when in fact, I am voluntarily supporting blatant corporate greed.
