I've been going to LA Fitness in Wayne on and off for over 10 years. The membership price is reasonable for the amenities they offer, unless the sauna is broken (fairly often), or the pool is closed (been months now). Classes being mostly free is nice. The gym itself is large and unless the gym is packed, you hardly ever have to wait to use any equipment.
The small problems I have with the gym itself mainly comes from the layout and clientele usage of the free weights. If you need to use a set of 20lbs-40lbs, good luck. There is the designated free weight area, a small fitness area, another larger area, and the womens only area. Hardly anyone using the weights in the non designated area will return them, which is very annoying compared to other gyms I've been to where the dumbbells are always returned. There was one day where I found a dumbbell by the mens showers of all places.
My biggest problem (besides the pool being closed for months and no discount offered) is the cleanliness of the men's locker room. I've been told this isn't an issue with the ladies room, but the men's room is gross. Some of it is from the clientele, but if that's the problem, they need to hire more/better janitorial staff. When I walk in around 5am, the locker room is still dirty, and it looks like a scene from a bad horror movie with many locker doors left open. Not tidy. I've seen trash left in a locker that stayed there for over a month (I'm sure it's still there.) The floor in the changing room hasn't been cleaned with anything more than a mop, if that, in a very long time and it feels gross just to stand on it. (Granted it's slightly less gross than when there was carpeting in there originally 10+ years ago.) Multiple locker doors/cabinets are broken, some toilets and sinks are wrapped in plastic bags as they are out of order. It's like nobody even the staff looks in the locker room before they close or when they open to make sure things are acceptable.
There was a day I came in at 5am and apparently a client, the night before, cut up all of the shower curtains. It was weird that it happened in the first place, and also that I was the one to inform them almost 2 hours after they opened. There was another time when I went to shower and dispensed some soap and it smelled like something died in it. It looked like it hadn't been changed in a very long time. Another instance where it's weird to be the one to inform the staff. Again, this is something, if the management and janitorial staff were on top of wouldn't be a problem.
The pool is really the main reason I've been a member at LA. It's a reasonably priced membership for a gym with a pool, so the smaller things I can look over, but without a working pool, LA Wayne is an just an OK gym that isn't run well. I currently started a membership at a nearby gym that's smaller, no pool or sauna, but I can walk out of the locker room without feeling like I need a second shower, and can always find a set of dumbbells without either giving up or searching the whole gym.
At the end of the day the Wayne location just needs basic customer service improvement. 1) Provide what you advertise, as in, get the pool fixed and organize the weights. 2) Make the consumer happy when they walk in and leave. Clean the locker room.
