Mediocrity at Premium Pricing
There are 3 hotels just one block from this gym (2-min walk). None of them send their customers to the BayClub, they instead have partnerships with Equinox which is 20 minutes drive away. This should tell you everything you need to know.
=== SHORT VERSION: ===
The people who run this gym tolerate low standards of both customer care and maintenance. Yet the pricing is premium.
If I had to guess the price in a blind-test I would say $90/mo. It's over 3 times that.
Either the standard must match the price (ideal IMO) or the price must match the standard, otherwise there's something wrong.
The only reason they can get away with that (so far) is because there is no competition nearby (if you want to start a gym here's your opportunity).
=== LONG VERSION: ===
I could write a book "The top 100 frustrating things that add up as a testimony to the BayClub mediocrity", but I'm just going to list a random few to give you a sense of how low standards are everywhere in this gym:
* NO MORE OUTDOOR CLASSES!
They "forgot" to ask/renew a noise-permit with the city so classes can no longer be outside. As a result, not only you don't get what you signed-up for (cycling classes in a basement!) but there are no more available rooms to stretch because they are now all taken for classes that used to be outside.
* About 10% of of the most convenient lockers are broken, so you change and put all your stuff in one only to realize you can't close it, so you move everything to another only to realize it's available because also broken. At that point you get mad and find a third one that finally works... I reported many broken lockers MONTHS ago to the front-desk who pretended to take note but never did anything. I see people get frustrated all the time after trying 2-3 lockers...
* Ultra-rigidity with closing hours: On weekends they close at 7.00pm. And they want customers to be already out of the building at minute 00 and put a lot of pressure on them in the locker-room about this. Imagine if you go to a restaurant and they start yelling at you to finish your desert... This shows how much they truly care about customer *SERVICE*.
* Some trainers are fat... lol (most are fine)
* Sauna that had MONTHS of periods where it would shut down at random and you find it cold when you get there... No one attacked the problem with a COMMITTED-enough mindset to solve it. After years they are finally redoing these saunas so it might finally get resolved.
* Sensor of paper towels dispenser frustrates everyone who washes their hands... All it takes is adjusting a sensitivity setting, but nobody is doing it! Yet they know because they wash their hands too and just like members avoid that dispenser. Same little issue for YEARS, things are never addressed.
* Capricious swimsuit spin-dryer that drives everyone nuts. For the last 2 years I've been here I heard people bang on it and get mad... No one has done anything.
* Dust under machines, batteries to count your reps that are never replaced (for YEARS they haven't worked!)
* Recently I cracked up during a set as I realized some masking tape for a 1-hour paint job has been there for months, no one either painted the thing nor removed the tape. (I don't care but it's hilarious and very revealing of how this place is ran)
* When they redo something, instead of figuring out clever way to keep things open they don't bother, just close the whole locker room for 4 weeks! lol So we see women go take their showers outside...
* Parking is dangerous for women at night, dark and no camera.
Anyway, I could go on and on with details that make this gym mediocre, but you get the idea. It's not one thing, it's the generalized disease of mediocritis that contaminates everything.
Only one reason you would sign-up: to save 2x20min drive each day if you live nearby (this is why I keep going). Otherwise you'd have to be insane to pay $300 entry fee + $300/mo (or whatever the new prices are, they keep cranking them up every 6 months while the standard drops).
